Ability description length: Aurelion Sol's 841 characters top all 173 champions, about 5.7x the shortest, Pantheon at 148

You know that short blurb that pops up when you hover over an ability icon? I counted it for the passive and four abilities of all 173 champions, and the longest kit belongs to Aurelion Sol at 841 characters. The shortest, Pantheon, has 148, so the gap is about 5.7x.

What exactly I counted

The source is the game data Riot Games publishes, specifically the ability descriptions in the Japanese client. I added up the passive plus Q, W, E and R for each champion. Formatting tags are stripped, and punctuation counts as one character. These are not the detailed tooltips full of damage numbers and ratios, but the plain-language summary of what each ability does.

Across 173 champions the average is about 359 characters and the median is 341. Aurelion Sol is about 2.3x the average.

Aurelion Sol's R comes in two stages, Falling Star and The Skies Descend, and that single ability runs 266 characters. That's about 1.8x Pantheon's entire 148-character kit. His W, E and R each beat Pantheon's total on their own. (Fun detail: in the Japanese client, his W description calls his Q by a slightly different name than the Q itself uses. With text this long, I guess proofreading gets hard.)

Aphelios explains five different weapon abilities inside his Q slot, so it hits 250. His W, on the other hand, is only 41. Kha'Zix has an evolved effect tacked onto all four abilities, and Briar's Blood Frenzy state is explained across her W, E and R. The pattern is clear: kits that pack several modes or conditions into one button float to the top.

All five of Pantheon's entries are under 40 characters. His Q is done in 19 characters, which translates to "Thrusts the spear in a direction, or throws it." Thrust or throw. That's it. Fair enough.

The shortest single entries are 15 characters: Taliyah's passive ("Move Speed increases near walls") and Seraphine's Q ("Deals damage in an area"). Taliyah's R, Weaver's Wall, is also just 16 ("Creates a long wall and rides on top of it"), so she owns two of the shortest. A wall whose range grows 2.6x with ability rank, summed up in 16 characters, might be a little too minimalist.

The English client gives almost the same ranking

I ran the same count on the English client too. The average is about 789 characters, roughly 2.2x the Japanese. Raw counts across languages aren't comparable, but the order is very close: the rank correlation between Japanese and English is 0.92. Aurelion Sol is first in English too with 1,884 characters. Last place goes to Rakan at 381, with Pantheon second-to-last at 405. Even in English, Aurelion Sol is about 4.9x the bottom.

Takeaway

Description length has almost nothing to do with Riot's official difficulty rating. The correlation between character count and difficulty across 173 champions is just 0.11. What drives length is the number of mechanics: stacking growth, form changes, swapping weapons. Kits like Pantheon's or Rakan's, where you can say what happens in one sentence when you press the button, stay short.

By slot, R has the longest average at 76.7 characters, about 1.1x Q's 69.5. Ultimates get a bit of extra explanation. Checking description length before picking up a new champion is at least a rough guide to how much you'll need to learn first. (I'm not sure I've ever read Aurelion Sol's R description all the way through.)

Pantheon gets his whole Q across in 19 characters. On description efficiency alone, he might be the strongest of all 173
